Help students learn again!
The World Affairs Council has provided global education programs for students attending Sixth District Elementary in Covington, Kentucky for the last 2 years. Through our monthly interactions with the after school students at BLOCK (Born Leaders of Covington, Kentucky) we have seen a growing interest in the students’ global knowledge. Dee Dee, the Family Resource Coordinator at Sixth District Elementary and Jameela, the Program Manager for Youth Development at The Center for Great Neighborhoods shared significant technology needs with us. We have enjoyed working with these students and will continue providing programming as schools transition to distant learning. This initiative, Tech to Students will provide students technology and wifi in their homes. We need your help to continue the students on a path to becoming good global citizens.
“The World Affairs Council has been an excellent collaboration. The Global Education programming has exposed our students to cultures that they have not been privy to. The hands-on cultural projects have been a delight. Our students walk away with a cultural experience and tangible product. Several students tell me they go home and Explain the project and culture to their families.” - Dee Dee Brown, Family Resource Coordinator.
Due to COVID19, the dramatic transition to distance learning, and the uncertainty of what classes will look like this fall, there are many students that need our support to help continue their education during these difficult times. Sixth District is a high priority school where 91% of students are on free and reduced lunch, and as a result technology is not at the top of their list to purchase. The students need technology not only to complete their work but also to assist parents as they instruct their child. In a recent poll, 275 of the 421 students do not have technology at home. Out of those 275 students, there are 20 students who have been identified as high-priority need for technology.
Meet Alex!
Alex, a second grader at Sixth District, wants to be an Astronaut when he grows up. If he could travel anywhere in the world, he would take a plane all the way to Guatemala so he could visit his family. He told Dee Dee that he was not able to do any classwork when they were sent home because of COVID-19. He feels a bit left out and behind. A Chromebook would help him and his brothers finish their homework a lot easier - they can also watch some of their favorite movies like Spiderman! His parents would be able to look for jobs and stay in touch with family in Guatemala. Your support would help to lift a huge burden and make sure that not only Alex stays connected but the entire family.
With your help, kids like Alex don’t have to fall behind this school year. Just $6,500 is needed to supply these 20 students with both a Chromebook and Wi-Fi for 9 months. We ask that you strongly consider supporting these students now. With a donation of just $300, you are sponsoring one student for the full academic year with technology and Wi-Fi. Any donation, though, will help to open up the world of learning for these kids!
Donations will be matched up to $3300 with support from the Council’s Board and Advisory Group.
Not only will these students be able to learn again at a higher level of instruction with your help, but they will also participate as Global Ambassadors for the World Affairs Council. As a Global Ambassador, each nominated student has the important job of representing their family and friends by encouraging cultural awareness in their community and school. Upon completion of this program, each student will receive a Global Ambassador certificate. With online projects from the Council, the students will:
- Develop critical thinking skills, strengthen map skills
- Broaden global awareness & explore the diverse world
- Promote understanding & acceptance of different cultures and people
“The Art Meets World Global Education program has given our kiddos a chance to experience firsthand different cultures from around the world. This not only expands their knowledge of the world we live in but also a newfound admiration for their neighbors and community members. Many students have conducted service learning projects to educate their fellow classmates on all that they have learned from the Global Guides.” - Jameela Salaah, Program Manager, Youth Development, Center for Great Neighborhoods
Thank you in advance for considering helping these high priority students at Sixth District where the World Affairs Council will continue to partner and bring programs with your help. Due to COVID19, the dramatic transition to distance learning, and the uncertainty of what classes will look like this fall, there are many students that need our support to help continue their education during these difficult times. Let's help these students now so that they can get back to school and learn in the fall!
