Teacher Professional Development Workshop

How can we inspire students to apply concepts that they’ve learned in the classroom to the real world? In this session, we will discuss how service-learning creates opportunities for students to take action and develop the planning, leadership, and cultural and community awareness skills necessary for success in this interconnected world. Educators and other professionals working with service-learning initiatives will share their insights on what components are necessary for a successful service-learning experience and how teachers can implement these experiences in their own school or classroom.

This session is open for middle and high school teachers of all subject areas and teachers have the opportunity to earn CEU/contact hour credit for participating in this session.

Learning Outcomes

Teachers will be able to:

  • Identify how service-learning addresses the “Take Action” domain of the Asia Society Global Competence matrix and P21’s Leadership and Responsibility skills.
  • Explain how service-learning can lead to an enhanced understanding of academic content.
  • Identify resources they can use to develop and implement a service-learning project in their classrooms.
  • Discuss best practices for implementing service-learning in an educational setting and making experiences meaningful and relevant to students.
